Gates Correctional Center, near Gatesville, is a minimum security prison for adult males.
Gates was one of 61 field unit prisons renovated or built during the late 1930's to house inmates who worked building roads.
In 1959, Gates housed white male youth sentenced for their first offense. In 1964, the mission of the prison changed. The male youth were transferred to Polk Youth Institution and Gates received black misdemeanants. Several years later all prisons were integrated and Gates remained a minimum security unit.
The prison's original housing dormitory remains in use. In 1976, a modular dormitory was added.
College of the Albemarle works with the prison to provide classes for adult education and preparation for the GED tests.
Inmates work in a number of jobs. They may be assigned to Department of Transportation road crews or to maintenance or kitchen duties at the prison. Inmates nearing parole may participate in work release, leaving the prison for the part of the day to work for a business in the community.
DIRECTIONS: Take U.S. 64 to Williamston and head north on U.S. 13 to U.S. 158. Drive east on 158 for about 17 miles. Just after the Gatesville bypass, the prison will be on the right.
