McCain Correctional Hospital serves as the minimum custody health care center for adult male inmates.

The facility was built from 1920 through 1950 as a state tuberculosis sanatorium before the property was deeded over to the Division of Prisons in October 1983. Consequently, there is a significant health care component reflected in the facility and staffing. The correctional hospital has both acute care and skilled nursing care beds with the medical ancillary services of laboratory, x-ray, respiratory therapy and pharmacy. There is a medical staff of more than 135 persons including four full-time physicians. There are 60 acute, skilled nursing and infirmary beds, plus, on a separate floor, 222 beds dedicated to the disabled, elderly and others whose medical condition requires a nursing home-type environment.
The prison has an average population of 360 with approximately one-third of those being healthy inmates who work in maintaining various operations. Inmates are assigned jobs, such as working on a community work squad, kitchen or maintenance help or janitors.

While the major thrust of the unit may be medical, the prison also has programs for geriatric and disabled inmates. They participate in recreation programs like horseshoes or morning exercise classes, ceramics and group sessions referred to as reminiscent therapy. Programs also include outside activities which allow the prison's senior citizen clubs to join in activities with the community senior citizen clubs. Social workers provide the inmates release planning, nursing home placement, and medical/mental health aftercare planning.
Sandhills Community College works with the prison to provide a horticulture therapy program. Classes are available in adult education and preparation for the GED tests.
Visitation is scheduled Saturday mornings and afternoons and Sunday afternoons, determined by inmate’s housing wing. All visitors must be pre-approved to visit and should contact the Officer-In-Charge with questions.
DIRECTIONS: Take U.S. Hwy. #1 to Aberdeen to N.C. Hwy.211 south to McCain. The facility is approximately 8 miles from Aberdeen on left on Old Hwy. 211 (between Aberdeen and Raeford).
Operator has the numbers, 10/97
