Mountain View Correctional Institution opened in December 1998 as a private prison owned and operated by Corrections Corporation of America. On October 1, 2000 the Department of Correction assumed operating control of the facility.
Mountain View Correctional Institution
has been designated to accommodate
nine hundred and eight (908) adjudicated adult offenders in a single cell
setting. Specific inmate housing includes one hundred ninety-six (196)
single-cell general population, six hundred sixty-four (664) double-cell general
population, twenty-four (24) segregation, and twenty-four (24) Intensive Control
(ICON). The entire facility is encircled with an electronic intrusion, taut wire
security system.
A prison industry enhancement program (PIE) is in place at Mountain View producing pantyhose for U.S. Textile Corporation. Inmates are paid a prevailing wage for their work, a rate comparable to the wage for similar manufacturing jobs in the local area.
Mountain View Correctional Institution has 269 employees.
Visitation:
The inmate visitation schedule is as follows:
--General Population Inmates:
The visitation schedule at Mountain View Correctional Institution is based on
the first letter of the inmate’s last name. Visitor groups will rotate every
four (4) months. It is the responsibility of the visitor to ensure they are
present at the correct time.
Groups, times, and months are as follows:
January through April
A-G: Saturday, 1-3 PM
H-M: Sunday, 8:30 AM-10:30 AM
N-Z: Sunday, 1-3 PM
May through August
A-G: Sunday, 1-3 PM
H-M: Saturday, 1-3 PM
N-Z: Sunday, 8:30 AM-10:30 AM
September through December
A-G: Sunday, 8:30 AM-10:30 AM
H-M: Sunday, 1-3 PM
N-Z: Saturday, 1-3 PM
--Special Visits for Regular Population Inmates:
Inmates who are housed in the Regular Population may request Special Visits.
Approval or disapproval for all Special Visits will be based on the security
needs of this facility. Special Visits may be requested for Attorneys, Clergy,
and immediate family members. Special visits must be arranged at a minimum of
twenty-four (24) hours in advance and no more than eight (8) days in advance and
will occur Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00am and 3:00pm. Special
visits for family purposes are expected to occur during regular visitation;
therefore, special visits are only authorized every ninety (90) days. Requests
for a Special Visit must be approved through the Administrative Secretary.
Visitation will not occur on holidays unless approved by the facility
Superintendent.
--Segregation Inmates:
Inmates who are assigned to segregation status or pose other identified security
concerns will receive visits by appointment only in the non-contact visitation
area. These visits must be approved by the Segregation Supervisor and have a
maximum duration of one (1) hour and will occur between the hours of 9:00am and
3:00pm Monday through Friday. Inmates housed in Segregation will receive no more
than one (1) visit per week.
DIRECTIONS: From Raleigh and points east, take Interstate 40 West to
Marion (Exit 86). At Marion, take Hwy 226 North toward Spruce Pine. Follow 226
North into Spruce Pine and turn right onto Hwy 19E. Go 4 miles then turn right
onto Amity Park Road. Mountain View Correctional Institution is on the left.
From Asheville and points west, take I-40 East to the Marion/Spruce Pine exit
(Exit 86). Go North on 226/221 through Marion. When the road splits, follow 226
North to Spruce Pine. At the intersection of 226N and 19E turn right at the
stoplight. You will go approximately 4 miles. Mayland Community College is on
the left and approximately ½ mile past the exit you will turn right on to Amity
Park Rd. Mountain View Correctional Institution is the first prison on the road.
You turn to the left and enter the driveway to the prison.
