Pamlico Correctional Institution opened in 1998 as a private prison owned and operated by Corrections Corporation of America. In October 2000 the Department of Correction assumed operational management, and the state purchased the property in 2004.

Pamlico Correctional Institution is a medium custody facility staffed by 209 employees. There are two housing units for the regular population, with 264 single cells in each. The segregation unit has 24 single cells for administrative or disciplinary segregation.  The protective custody unit has  24 cells. 

Pamlico Correctional Institution is committed to providing educational and personal growth opportunities to the inmate population. Pamlico Community College works with the prison to provide a variety of courses. Vocational classes include Electrical Wiring, Masonry, Carpentry, Re-upholstery, Plumbing, Horticulture, and Information Systems. Adult Basic Education and GED classes prepare inmates for the General Education Diploma. Rehabilitation and treatment programs include Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Napoleon Hill, Anger Management, and Thinking for a Change.

 VISITATION is by appointment only. Visits are scheduled by calling 252-745-5538, Monday through Friday between the hours of  9:00 a.m. - noon and 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Visitors (adults and children) must be on the inmate's approved visitation list before a visit will be scheduled. Normally, the number of approved visitors is limited to three. Visits must be scheduled within seven days of the visitation date requested.

 Regular population inmates who are assigned to school or incentive wage jobs will visit as follows. The visitor may select the preferred session as seating allows:

Saturday - 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
Saturday - 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Sunday -   1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Regular population inmates who are not assigned to school or to an incentive wage job will visit as follows, as seating allows:

Tuesday - 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Inmates in Administrative or disciplinary Segregation will visit as follows, as seating allows:

Wednesday - 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
                    3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Thursday - 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Inmates who are assigned to Protective Custody will visit as follows, and as seating allows:

Wednesday  1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

 

Special visits by an inmate’s Chaplain or Minister will be scheduled as follows:

Wednesday  1:30 - 3:30 p.m.

DIRECTIONS: Pamlico CI is located in Bayboro, approximately 18 miles east of New Bern.

From Raleigh, take US Hwy 70 East to New Bern. Take the US 17 North exit for Bridgeton/Bayboro (you will be on the Neuse River Bridge). After crossing the bridge, take the NC 55 exit to Bayboro. In Bayboro, turn left on 3rd Street by the courthouse. Go 1 mile and Pamlico CI is on the left.

 From Greenville, take Hwy 33 East. Follow Hwy 33 East approximately 45 miles. Go through Aurora, cross the small bridge, then take the first right on State Road 1002 (Bay City Road). Continue on Bay City Road approximately 10 miles. Pamlico CI is on the right.
