RutherfordCorrectionalCenter,
near Spindale, is a minimum security prison for adult males.
Rutherford
was one of 51 county prisons established in 1931. It was dedicated to serve the
citizens of North Carolina on August 18, 1932 under the direction of Rutherford's first Superintendent and previous Sheriff of
Rutherford County, W.C. Hardin. the original facility, which is still in use
today consisted of an administrative office, kitchen, and dormitory with a total
construction cost of $25,000.
The General
Assembly provided for two 50-bed dormitories at Rutherford
as part of the $28.5 million Emergency Prison Facilities Development program
authorized in 1987. Both dormitories opened in September 1988. Lawmakers
approved a 50 bed dormitory in the $87.5 million prison construction program
authorized in 1993.
The prison now has
space for 236 minimum custody inmates.
Rutherford has
provided inmates to work on North
Carolina
highways since 1932. Currently the facility provides inmate highway labor in
Cleveland, Henderson, Polk and Rutherford counties. Currently, there are 54
inmates on highway labor. Additionally, Rutherford
provides 30 inmates to the community through the community work program. In an
effort to enhance skills within the public, there are 35 selected inmates
working in private industry through the work release program.
The prison provides
substance abuse treatment through New Directions Program, DART aftercare,
Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.
Visitation for
inmates is on Sunday of each week with 2 visitation periods. The first
visitation period is from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. for inmates whose last names begin
with letters A through L. The second visitation period is from 3 - 5 p.m. for
inmates whose last names begin with M through Z.

DIRECTIONS: Take
I-40 to U.S. 64 south, Rutherfordton exit. After approximately 30 miles turn
left at caution light onto Hudlow road. Travel approximately 2 miles, go through
the caution light, turn right onto
Ball Park Road, then left onto Ledbetter road. The
prison is approximately one mile ahead on the right.
