Wayne Correctional Center

Wayne Correctional Center, near Goldsboro, is medium security prison for adult males.

Wayne flagpole and signWayne was established in 1978, when the Department of Human Resources Cherry Hospital transferred the old Purser Building to the Department of Correction. After extensive renovations, the prison received its first inmates in May 1979. The prison served as a diagnostic/reception center and provided a residential mental health program.

The diagnostic/reception center was moved to another prison in 1984 and the mental health program was phased out in 1986. For the next two years Wayne housed male youth felons who were first offenders.

In 1987, the General Assembly provided for a correction substance abuse program. The first Drug/Alcohol Recovery Treatment or DART program for inmates began operation January 25, 1988 at Wayne.

The General Assembly provided for an additional 272 beds (eight, 24 man dormitories) at Wayne as part of the $62.1 million prison construction program authorized during a special session in 1994. Lawmakers provided the expansion as a continuing care component in conjunction with DART.

Wayne Correctional CenterDART provides intensive inpatient treatment in a fast moving, 35 to 90 day treatment cycle with lectures, films, educational and therapy groups, as well as individual counseling. Inmates work with professional staff and peer counselors. DART relies heavily on the principles of Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous with group meetings available in the evenings.

Wayne Community College works with the prison to provide classes for adult education and preparation for the GED tests.

Inmates may be assigned to work on a Department of Transportation road in Wayne or Lenoir counties or as maintenance or kitchen help at the prison.
