RALEIGH -- More than 2,000 North Carolina prisoners are working across the state today to clean up the debris left by Hurricane Fran.

As directed by Governor Jim Hunt, State Correction Secretary Franklin Freeman has mobilized inmate work crews to help eastern North Carolina communities remove fallen tree limbs and clear debris.

"We've had prisoners working since Friday helping to clear roads and clean up communities" Secretary Freeman said. "They're working today and they'll continue to mop up after Fran until the job's done. Then they'll return to their routine work assignments."
