Asheboro - The Chaplains’ Retreat entitled "Spiritual Renewal: Finding Your Spiritual Path; Following Your Spiritual Path; Sharing Your Spiritual Path" is scheduled for June 16-18 at Camp Caraway.

Asheville - DAPP employees are gearing up for Probation and Parole’s third annual conference May 28-30 at the Radisson Hotel. Workshop topics include: The Victim, Gang Awareness, Automated Case Management, Restorative Justice, Testifying as a Witness, and Financial Planning.

Greenville - Carteret superintendent Charlie Meeks won first place in the East Carolina University purple and gold BBQ contest held recently. The judge said he knew the winner as soon as he tasted the pig.

Greensboro - The annual conference of the American Correctional Food Service Association, N.C. chapter will be June 24-25 at the Holiday Inn Four Seasons. Workshop topics include: Total Quality Management, Making the Best With What You Have, Stress Management, and Efficient Food Service Response. An awards luncheon and presentation of scholarships are also planned.

Morganton - Fifty teachers and administrators attended a DOP- sponsored workshop this spring at Foothills. They explored differences in how people learn. The goal was to help staff work to improve student performance, taking into account different forms of intelligence.

The three-day workshop featured exercises to develop lesson plans that incorporate differing learning styles. Participants learned to use their own teaching styles to reach people in the different ways they learn and process information.

Participants learned that people who have been unsuccessful in school may particularly benefit from being taught in a way that teaches to their learning style.

New Bern - Probation and Parole Officer Tim Melton was recognized by Chief PPO Susan Walker and the New Bern Police Department for his invaluable assistance in March. Thanks to information provided by Melton, the New Bern Police Department quickly arrested and charged four suspects with the armed robbery of a local supermarket. Melton received a certificate for outstanding performance from the New Bern Police Department.
