Special Olympics needs volunteers
Be part of history and the worlds biggest sporting event of 1999 by becoming a volunteer for the Special Olympics World Summer Games.
In the summer of 1999, approximately 7,000 Special Olympics athletes representing 150 countries will travel to North Carolina to compete and to celebrate their accomplishments during the World Summer Games.
In order for the Games to happen, the efforts of approximately 35,000 volunteers are needed.
Therefore, Gov. Jim Hunt signed Executive Order 132, granting volunteer leave for state employees serving in the games.
This order provides matching volunteer leave for each state employee volunteering for the Special Olympics World Summer Games. State employees may be granted one hour of additional volunteer leave for each hour volunteered of their own time during the period beginning Jan. 1, 1999, through July 31, 1999, up to a maximum of eight hours.
