Bryant named to head Umstead
BUTNER Acting Correction Secretary Joe Hamilton named John Bryant superintendent of Umstead Correctional Center effective Nov 1.
"Bryant grew up around Umstead
where his father was the prisons superintendent,
and hes worked 21 years for the agency preparing
for this assignment," said Hamilton. "Hes
a good manager, and hell continue to put prisoners
to work for communities and state agencies in Granville
County." Bryant began his career with the department in 1977 as a program assistant at Granville Correctional Center. The next year, he moved to Durham Correctional Center where he worked as a program supervisor and, later, program director. In April 1989, he was named assistant superintendent at Umstead. Bryant is assistant commander for the Prison Emergency Response Team and a certified corrections instructor. He is a member of the North Carolina Correctional Association, State Employees Association of North Carolina and is a member and past president of the South Granville Athletic Association. |
Bryants father, Joe L. Bryant served as superintendent of Umstead Correctional Center and a Division of Prisons Region Commander between 1955 and 1982.
Bryant, a Creedmore native, graduated from South Granville High School. He graduated from N.C. State in 1977 with a degree in political science and criminal justice.
Bryant and his wife Vicki have two children, 24-year-old daughter Heather and 18-year-old son Kevin.
