Basketball Team Takes First

JACKSON - Odom Correctional Institution’s basketball team won first place in the Roanoke Rapids Recreation Department’s Industrial League with a 10-2 record.

Team members are Donald Wiggins, Anthony Buffaloe, Steven Stephenson, Clyde Moore, Kenneth Lassiter, Tim Deloatch, Reggie Benthall, Jeff Ramsey, Aro Parker, Joseph McGee, Juan Vaughan, Dexter Hayes, Reginald Wiggins and Darian Banks.

Coaches are Ricky Tann and Bryan Cotton.

1998 Firearms Instructor Conference Scheduled

RALEIGH - The Office of Staff Development and Training is sponsoring a Firearm Instructor Conference for all DOC certified Firearm Instructors on March 30-31, 1998.

The conference will be conducted at the Kerr Scott Building at the State Fairgrounds off Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh. The conference begins Monday at 12:00 PM and ends Tuesday at 5:00 PM.

A variety of topics will be presented along with vendor displays. All firearm instructors are encouraged to attend.

Employee of Quarter Selected

RALEIGH - Dawn Toone, accounting technician with the Controller’s Office, was selected as Employee of the Quarter for October - December 1997 by Hilda Painter and Wesley Taylor.

Toone began her new job as fixed assets coordinator in June 1997. Controller Sam Newman said Toone has done an excellent job of learning the fixed asset system and has successfully balanced monthly equipment reports for the financial reports.

Newman said he has been impressed with Toone’s professionalism and her commitment to a high standard of work performance.

DOC Employers Honored As Patriots

GOLDSBORO - Boyce Lambert, superintendent of Catawba Correctional Center, and Tricia Hatchell, telecommunications analyst with the Division of Prisons administrative services, were recently honored for employer support of the guard and reserve.

Both received the "My Boss is a Patriot" award during a banquet given for North Carolina employers by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Guard and Reserve and the North Carolina Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.

Correction Officer Michael Isenhour, a sergeant in the Air National Guard, nominated Lambert for the award and June Montgomery, manager of the inmate payphone program who is a member of the Army Reserves, nominated Hatchell.

Pasquotank Selects Employee of Year

ELIZABETH CITY - The Community Resource Council for Pasquotank Correctional Institution recently presented the Employee of the Year Award for 1997 to Correctional Officer Eva Johnson.

Johnson was selected out of 458 positions at Pasquotank Correctional Institution for her dedication to her job.

Nominees included the following Employee of the Month award winners: Brenda Dillon, correctional officer, January 1997; Linda Chambers, accounting technician I, February 1997; Gary Cook, acting classification coordinator, March 1997; Iris King, processing assistant, April 1997; Johnson, correctional officer, May 1997; Felicia Crutch, correctional officer, June 1997; and Lori Fitchett, processing assistant, July 1997.

Michael Harrell, correctional officer, August 1997; Michael J. Griffin, correctional officer, September 1997; Forrest Craig, correctional officer, October 1997; Vickie Johnson, correctional officer, November 1997; and Chuck Whidbee, correctional program assistant II, December 1997.

Santa Brings Christmas to Students

MORGANTON - Foothills Correction Officer Terry Anderson played Santa for the day during a visit to Salem Elementary School in December. "Santa’s" visit was part of a project planned by Foothills’ Employee Activity Committee as a way to give something back to the community. Each Christmas employees at Foothills Correctional Institution work with the local school system to provide gifts for less fortunate children. This past Christmas, Foothills employees donated their time and money to brighten the holidays for several students at Salem Elementary School. u
