North Carolina earns high marks for drug testing program

North Carolina is one of two states in 100 percent compliance with the required and recommended elements for drug testing in both institutional and post-release settings.

Each state was given a report card during the Violent Offender Incarceration/Truth-in-Sentencing workshop held recently in Washington, D.C., stating its level of compliance

Comments on North Carolina’s report card read as follows:

"North Carolina is one of the model states in terms of its guidelines, and has satisfied all mandatory and recommended criteria for institutional-based and post-release settings. North Carolina’s particular strength was in its institutional policies and procedures. "The latter were so well regarded that staff from North Carolina served as resources at the October 1997 training offered by CPO for states to assist the states in the design of their guidelines. Staff from North Carolina continue to be actively involved in the design and implementation processes by serving as technical assistance providers to states requesting this assistance." u
