O'Konek heads Wayne

GOLDSBORO ¾ Long-time correction employee, Carla O'Konek, was named superintendent of Wayne Correctional Institution in July. She replaces Mike Bell who was promoted to superintendent of Pender Correctional Institution in Burgaw.

O'Konek has worked for the Department of Correction since 1974 when she was a programs assistant for Carteret Correctional Center in Newport. She was promoted often, and in 1991, she became superintendent of Martin Correctional Center in Williamston. In 1995, she worked in the Eastern Area Office in Greenville, overseeing 11 prisons.

"Carla O'Konek has worked hard during her career, and has proven herself to be an extremely capable manager," Correction Secretary Mack Jarvis said. "The employees of Wayne and the surrounding community can expect a top-notch professional to head this prison."

Born in Southampton County, Virginia, O'Konek graduated in 1972 from Southampton High School. She and her husband, William Smith, have three sons, Erin, Jeremy and Jay. u
