Correctional, Probation and Parole Officers Week

RALEIGH - Gov. Jim Hunt has proclaimed the week of June 7-13 as "Correctional, Probation and Parole Officers Week" in North Carolina.
In recognition of this special week, the North Carolina Department of Correction will honor its 1998 Officers of the Year during an awards ceremony to be held at 2:00 p.m. on June 9. The ceremony will take place in the Department of Corrections conference room located at 2020 Yonkers Road, Raleigh, North Carolina.
Fifteen officers have been chosen for this years honor from more than 11,400 correctional and probation/parole officers statewide.

Oxendine, Judicial District 16B in Lumberton; and Sanders Curtis Epperson, Judicial District 26 in Charlotte. In proclaiming June 7-13 as Correctional, Probation and Parole Officers Week in North Carolina, Gov. Hunt said correctional and probation/parole officers should be recognized for their role in ensuring the safety of the general public, correction staff and offenders. The departments 11,400 correctional and probation/parole officers are responsible for the supervision of more than 150,000 offenders and often must perform their work under adverse and hazardous conditions, while continuing to meet the high standards set by their profession and the expectations of the public. -cjh- |
Proclamation WHEREAS, North Carolinas more than 11,400 Correctional Officers and Probation/Parole Officers are responsible for the daily supervision of 150,000 offenders; and, WHEREAS, Correctional and Probation/Parole Officers are responsible for ensuring the safety of the general public, staff and offenders; and WHEREAS, Correctional and Probation/Parole Officers must act as counselors, communicators, and experts at crisis management, acting to resolve conflicts and to restrain persons representing a danger to themselves or others; and WHEREAS, Correctional and Probation/Parole Officers must develop and maintain these skills through rigorous basic and annual training; and WHEREAS, Correctional and Probation/Parole Officers often must perform their work under adverse and hazardous conditions, while continuing to meet the high standards set by their profession and the expectations of the public; and WHEREAS, Correctional and Probation/Parole Officers often perform outstanding services outside the scope of their normal responsibilities to their communities in times of need and crisis; NOW, THEREFORE, I, JAMES B. HUNT JR., Governor of the State of North Carolina, join Secretary of Correction Mack Jarvis in proclaiming June 7-13, 1998, as "Correctional, Probation and Parole Officers Week" in North Carolina, and recommend this observance to our citizens. |
