Horton named head of FountainROCKY MOUNT Jimmy Horton, a 23-year
veteran with the Department, was recently named superintendent of Fountain Correctional
Center for Women. Horton served as Fountains assistant superintendent of custody and
operations for six years before being named superintendent of the facility. Originally from Zebulon, Horton graduated from Smithfield Senior High School. He began his career with the Department in 1976 as a correctional officer at Triangle Correctional Center where he worked for five years before being promoted to sergeant at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women. During his ten years at NCCIW, he held several positions including sergeant, lieutenant and captain. In 1991 he was promoted to assistant superintendent at Polk Youth Institution and remained there until 1993 when he transferred to Fountain. |

As superintendent of Fountain, Horton oversees more than 400 minimum security female inmates and a staff of 203 employees.
Horton said when he first began working for the Department, he had no idea that he would still be around 23 years later. However, he was not the first in his family to make a career out of corrections. Horton said his father, Jeffers Horton, was a correctional officer at Central Prison for 27 years before retiring around 1978.
An avid deer hunter, Horton always saves his vacation for deer season when he takes some time off to do some hunting. u
