Raleigh - Correction Secretary Theodis Beck has named Prisons Director Dan Stieneke to the post of deputy secretary for the Dept. of Correction. A correction employee since 1974, Stieneke has led the Division of Prisons for the past two years.

Stieneke has done a tremendous job heading the prison
system, and he has done so with deep intelligence,
incredible foresight and top management skills," said Beck. "I welcome his
insight and dedication to this department as he helps
carry forward Gov. Hunt's
initiatives to keep dangerous criminals behind bars and
make them work." Stieneke is a native of Alta, Iowa and holds an undergraduate's and a master's degree in psychology from Central Missouri State University. He began his career with the N.C. Dept. of Correction as a staff psychologist at what was then Harnett Youth Center in Lillington. In 1977, at the age of 27, he became superintendent of Western Youth Center. Ten years later, Stieneke became a district manager in the North Piedmont Area. |

Stieneke will oversee the operations of the Division of Prisons and the Division of Community Corrections. He joins two other deputies, Chief Deputy Joe Hamilton and Deputy Secretary Fred Aikens.
Stieneke and his wife Marilyn have two sons, 19-year-old Joshua, and 12-year-old Andrew.
