BAYBORO – More than 250 local residents, community leaders and Department of Correction staff joined together Nov. 1 at a reception celebrating Pamlico Correctional Institution as a state-operated facility.

The Department of Correction assumed operation of Pamlico as well as Mountain View Correctional Institution in Spruce Pine on Oct. 1. Corrections Corporation of America had previously operated the two prisons since they opened in 1998.

Administrator Steve Muller welcomed the group, which assembled in what usually serves as the visiting area between inmates and their family and friends. Community support for the prison was evident throughout the event, from the presentation of the colors by the Pamlico County High School Junior ROTC unit to the refreshments that were donated by local businesses.

Among the local officials in attendance were State Rep. Scott Thomas and Bayboro Mayor Evelyn Ward. "It is a challenge to invest in the young men here and bring them back into society," Mayor Ward said. "You (the Pamlico staff) are welcome here and I look forward to working with you to meet the challenges that lie ahead."

Correction Secretary Theodis Beck expressed his appreciation to the numerous staff within the department who worked to make the transition from private to public operations a success. "From the beginning, the staff never hesitated. They set about their tasks and got the job done," he said. Secretary Beck noted that Correction employees have a lot of pride in their profession and that he feels the staff at Pamlico exemplifies that.

Other speakers at the event included Chief Deputy Secretary Dan Stieneke, Director of Prisons James French and Eastern Region Prisons Director Joe Lofton. Following the program, staff hosted tours of the facility.
