Inmate shot during escape
SMITHFIELD - Inmate Andres Francisco Vasquez, 28, is in custody at Central Prison after escaping from Johnston Correctional Institution about 5:45 p.m. Monday.
Correctional officers in the watch towers at the prison saw Vasquez climbing the fence and fired shots at him. Vasquez took off running and disappeared into the woods. He was picked up a short time later by Johnston County sheriff’s deputies and was taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital for treatment of three pellet wounds.
Vasquez was convicted of manslaughter in Wilson County on August 1, 2000. He was sentenced to seven years and two months.
Johnston Correctional Institution is a medium custody prison and houses approximately 644 inmates.
