NC Probation/Parole Association, Division II
Holds Winter Workshop in Sanford
by Cathy Smith
|SANFORD - On February 20, 2001
Division II Chapter of the NCPPA conducted a winter workshop featuring
keynote speaker, Teresa Chambers, Durham Chief of Police.
Chief Chambers challenged the employees of the Division of Community Corrections to demonstrate a "spirit of service" in the performance of their duties. She praised the Durham County Probation Officers for their cooperation with other area law enforcement agencies and for their contributions to improving the quality of life in their community.
She also cited success stories regarding offenders in the STARS initiative (Strategies to Abate and Reduce Senseless Violence). This creative approach to dealing with habitual, violent offenders promotes representation from all local law enforcement agencies, members of the community and the offender's family.
Ms. Billie Jo Atkins, President of NCPPA, recognized the accomplishments of the NCPPA Board during the year and announced the establishment of a $5,000.00 accidental death/line of duty insurance policy for members. Premiums for this benefit will be paid from membership dues. She also reminded everyone of the upcoming annual NCPPA Conference to be held in Charlotte on June 13 - 15.
Each workshop attendee donated much needed items to be delivered to the Ronald McDonald House in Durham.
