named John Crawford superintendent of Neuse Correctional Institution in
Goldsboro effective Nov. 1.
RALEIGH - Secretary Theodis Beck has named John Crawford superintendent of Neuse Correctional Institution in Goldsboro effective Nov. 1.
"John Crawford is a veteran of this department who has served us well in many capacities," said Secretary Beck. "His long history at our facilities in the Goldsboro area and his knowledge of Wayne County make him the ideal manager to lead the staff at Neuse."
Neuse Correctional Institution is a minimum-security prison housing approximately 800 male inmates. It operates a diagnostic center where all male misdemeanants are admitted into the state prison system. Upon arrival, inmates undergo a series of evaluations that will determine future prison assignments.
Crawford began his corrections work in 1972 as a community college instructor teaching recreational classes at the former Goldsboro Youth Center. He later served as a program assistant, program supervisor, program director and assistant superintendent at that facility.
In 1991, he was named assistant superintendent at Wayne Correctional Center and was promoted to superintendent at Goldsboro Correctional Center in 1996. In 1998, he became superintendent at Duplin Correctional Center in Kenansville. Since 2000, he has served as superintendent at Wayne Correctional Center.
A native of the Grantham, Crawford lives on the dairy farm where he grew up. He is a graduate of Mount Olive College and Atlantic Christian College in Wilson.
Crawford is an active leader in several community and professional organizations, including the Grantham/Wayne County Grange, Grantham Volunteer Rescue EMS, Parents & Professionals for Handicapped Citizens of Wayne County and the State Employees Combined Campaign.
Crawford replaces Ed McMichael who retired.
