RALEIGH – Correction Enterprises, the prison industry division of the Department of Correction, has signed an agreement with the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) to transport textbooks bound for students in North Carolina’s public school classrooms.

More than one million new books are shipped each year from DPI’s Raleigh textbook warehouse to 117 local school districts across the state. Using trucks and drivers from the Correction Enterprises fleet, Department of Public Instruction officials hope to save 40-50 percent of the approximately $250,000 spent annually with private trucking and package shipping companies.

The partnership was born when state school officials realized that Correction Enterprises trucks were making regular deliveries to many prison facilities located adjacent to school system maintenance shops, where textbooks are delivered. "There were so many synergies," said DPI textbook warehouse manager Drew Fairchild. "This deal just made great sense."

"This new partnership is exciting for Correction Enterprises. We’re developing a new business and we’ll be helping our state’s schools save critical tax dollars," said Correction Enterprises director Karen Brown.

Correction Enterprises has a dual mission of providing quality products and services to tax supported entities at an affordable price, as well as providing rehabilitative opportunities through meaningful work experience to more than 2,000 inmates. Correction Enterprises is modeled after private sector business and is entirely self-supporting through the sale of its goods and services. Each year it distributes a portion of gross revenues to the North Carolina General Fund, the Victim’s Compensation Fund and to the Department of Correction.
