Catawba Correctional Center to break ground for religious services center NEWTON – Officials at Catawba Correctional Center will break ground for a religious services center on Friday, April 28 at 2:00 p.m. The 4,800 square foot building will be used for religious services and meetings of all faith groups represented in the Division of Prisons. In addition it will house educational classes, substance abuse treatment programs, pre-release/ re-entry classes and other rehabilitation programs designed to help inmates succeed after leaving prison. Construction is expected to begin in May and will be managed by the Central Engineering section of the Department of Correction. Skilled labor will be provided by inmates enrolled in the Inmate Construction Program. The project will cost approximately $300,000 and is being funded largely by Catawba Prison Ministries in cooperation with the fundraising efforts of local churches. Additional funding is from the Division of Prisons Inmate Welfare Fund and the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation. Completion of the project is expected in January 2007. From Interstate 40, US-321 Business can be accessed easily from either exit 128 or exit 133. After turning south onto to US-321 Business in Conover, go approximately 7 miles to Prison Camp Road and turn left. The prison is about ¼ of a mile on the left. # # #
