Correctional officer given award for saving inmate’s life Officer Todd Morrison’s rounds on the morning of October 5 at Piedmont Correctional Institution in Salisbury proved to be anything but normal. As he was making his security rounds, he discovered an inmate attempting suicide by hanging and Morrison quickly took action to save the inmate. The award was presented to Morrison today at a ceremony at the Department of Correction’s training complex in Apex. Ten other officers from across the state were similarly honored. “Officer Morrison’s selfless act saved an inmate’s life,” W.T. Hargrave, assistant superintendent for custody at Piedmont said in his recommendation for the award. “The work ethic and heroism on the part of Officer Morrison make him an easy nominee for Correctional Officer of the Year.” Morrison has been with the Division of Prisons since 2003. # # # Editors: A digital copy of the photo is available in color and black-and-white by calling the Public Affairs Office at 919-716-3700.
