Escaped inmate captured in Havelock

HAVELOCK - Inmate Robert Powell, who escaped from an inmate work crew in Vanceboro Tuesday morning, was captured in Havelock at about 4 a.m. Thursday.

Department of Correction officers spotted Powell near the Berkeley Mall in Goldsboro last night, but he ran into nearby woods and eluded them. Powell is believed to have then stolen a car from a service station near the mall.

That car was later involved in a chase on U.S. 70 into Havelock where police officers used spike strips to stop the vehicle. Powell jumped from the car and ran but was arrested by Craven County sheriff’s deputies.

Powell was taken to Craven Correctional Institution and made a first appearance in court Thursday morning on escape charges.
