Inmate escapes from work crew in Surf City

 SURF CITY - A search is underway for an inmate who walked away from a prison work crew in Surf City this afternoon.   The eight-man community work crew from New Hanover Correctional Center in Wilmington was working for the Town of Surf City public works department when inmate Chad Cordon walked off at about 2:30 p.m.

 Cordon, 34, is a white male serving 3 ½ years for receiving a stolen vehicle, DWI, breaking and entering, speeding to elude arrest and receiving stolen goods.

 His convictions were in Carteret and Wake counties in 2007 and 2008.  He was due to be released from prison in July 2010.

 Anyone with information on Cordon’s whereabouts is asked to call local law enforcement or New Hanover Correctional at 910-251-2666.
