Inmate shot and killed during escape attempt

 SMITHFIELD - Inmate Adelino Najera #0717314 was shot and killed by a correctional officer during an escape attempt at about 12 p.m. today.    Najera had scaled two fences surrounding the paint plant adjacent to Johnston Correctional Institution.   After he ignored several commands from corrections officers to stop, he was shot and killed.

 Najera was serving a 10-year sentence for second degree murder.  He was convicted in Stokes County in 2001.

 The State Bureau of Investigation is on scene and conducting an investigation.  State law permits corrections officers to use deadly force to stop an escaping felon.
