New Hanover prison has new superintendent
WILMINGTON
-- Susan White is the new superintendent at New
Hanover
Correctional
Center.
She
succeeds Ennis Oates, who transferred to Neuse Correctional Institution
in Goldsboro.
New
Hanover Correctional incarcerates approximately 400 male offenders in
minimum custody, and has a staff of 112 officers, administrative
personnel and support staff.
White
was previously an assistant superintendent for programs at Tabor
Correctional Institution, a new close-custody prison expected to open
later this year in Columbus County.
Prior to joining Tabor Correctional last year, White had been assistant
superintendent for programs since 1999 at Pender Correctional
Institution, where she started as a program director in 1994.
Her
corrections career began 1989 at
Blue Ridge
Youth Center
in 1989 and includes several months at the Wilmington Residential
Facility for Women.
Prior to working
for the Department of Correction (DOC), White had several years
experience in private offender treatment, law enforcement and teaching.
White
earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and criminal justice at
Appalachian State University in 1979. She has also completed DOC’s
Correctional Leadership Development Program.
The
Gaston
County native and her husband reside in
Brunswick County. She enjoys gardening, reading,
art and riding her motorcycle.
