Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women to be dedicated SWANNANOA – Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women will celebrate its dedication with an open house Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m. Women inmates previously housed at Black Mountain Correctional Center for Women were transferred to Swannanoa in July. Under a plan approved last year by the General Assembly, the Department of Correction (DOC) moved its operations to the northern part of the Swannanoa Valley Youth Development Center while the Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention operates a youth development center for male juvenile offenders in the southern section of the campus. The long-term goal of both departments is for a complete transition of the campus to DOC and to increase the number of female inmates at the center to 165 by late 2009. Speakers for the dedication ceremony will include Secretary of Correction Theodis Beck, Division of Prisons Director Boyd Bennett and Steve Bailey, Western Region director for the Division of Prisons. Swannanoa Administrator Debbie Hughes will recognize employees of the facility. Tours of the facility will be conducted following the dedication ceremonies. Directions: Interstate 40 west to exit 59, turn left off the ram to the traffic light. Turn right onto U.S. 70 East. At the first intersection, turn left onto Whittson Avenue. At the stop sign, turn left onto Old U.S. 70 to the first traffic light. Turn left onto Lake Eden Road. Turn left at Division of Prisons Facility Sign onto access road, then left into the prison gate. # # #
