Inmate dies at Central Prison

 RALEIGH - Inmate Kayin Whitfield (#0735718) died Thursday night at Central Prison.  A nurse found him unresponsive and not breathing during a regular check at 9:30 p.m.

Medical staff performed CPR and transported Whitfield to the Central Prison hospital emergency room, but he could not be revived.  He was pronounced dead at 10:20 p.m.  Whitfield’s body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office, and preliminary findings indicate death due to natural causes.

 The Department of Correction has asked the State Bureau of Investigation to conduct a review, as is usual with unexpected deaths in custody.

 Whitfield, 28, was serving a 5-month sentence for driving with license revoked, assault on an officer and damage to property.
