Inmate dies from injuries sustained in farm accident

TILLERY – Inmate Woody Chavis died this morning after he was backed over by a tractor at the Caledonia Prison Farm.  Chavis and another inmate were working shortly before 8 a.m. to hitch a trailer to a farm tractor when Chavis was accidentally run over.

 Prison medical staff administered CPR and first aid before EMS arrived and transported Chavis to a local hospital.  He was airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where he died at 11:15 a.m.

 Chavis, 47, was serving a life sentence for 1^st degree sexual offense and kidnapping.  He was an inmate assigned to Tillery Correctional Center and worked on the neighboring Caledonia Farm.

 Department of Correction safety officials are conducting a safety investigation and the Halifax County Sheriff’s Department is reviewing the situation, however, no foul play is suspected.
