Inmates clean state’s roadways during spring Litter Sweep

RALEIGH North Carolina inmates cleaned 7,263 miles of roadway and collected 85,320 bags of litter during the Spring Litter Sweep 2009 from April 18 to May 2.

Division of Prisons Director Robert C. Lewis announced today that state prison facilities contributed 113,990 inmate man hours to the litter reduction efforts.

“The comments we receive clearly reflect the appreciation of the citizens of North Carolina for this effort,” Lewis said.  “The results of the Spring Litter Sweep 2009 showcase the excellent cooperation and dedication we continually see from our employees when faced with important challenges.”

Each year, the Litter Sweep happens during the fall and spring.  Adopt-a-Highway volunteers, local governments, schools, churches, businesses, concern citizens and inmates conduct community cleanups in all 100 counties across the state.

Editor’s Note:  If you would like specific information regarding cleanup figures for your area please contact the Public Affairs Office at (919) 716-3700.
