Intense search leads to escapee’s capture

RALEIGH - An escaped inmate is back in the Department of Correction's (DOC) custody after the DOC followed several leads that prompted them to believe Xavier Shaw (#0365149) was in Raleigh. Shaw is now at Central Prison in Raleigh.

Around noon on Saturday, the DOC activated about 30 personnel on its Prison Emergency Response Team (PERT) along with five canine squads to focus its search in Raleigh.

"One of our DOC staff in Alexander County followed up on a report of a stolen vehicle and shared that information with PERT in Raleigh who in turn notified local law enforcement," said Jennie Lancaster, DOC's chief operating officer. She added, "From there, one thing lead to another and diligence and cooperation from all involved in the search lead to Shaw's capture. I want to thank our PERT teams and all the law enforcement agencies that were involved in this search."

The Raleigh Police Department spotted Shaw near New Bern Avenue and New Hope Church Road just after 8 p.m. Saturday in Raleigh. Shaw ran, but was quickly captured and was arrested without serious incident. The DOC had been working closely with several law enforcement agencies to include: Raleigh Police Department, Wake County Sheriff's Office, Alexander County Sheriff's Office, State Highway Patrol, U.S. Marshals Service and others. 

Shaw, 45, had escaped June 30 from Alexander Correctional Institution. He was serving a six-year sentence for kidnapping and several counts of common law robbery. His prison term was scheduled to end Aug. 30, but he has charges pending in Wake County for robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon and other crimes.
