New superintendent named at Rutherford Correctional Center

 SPINDALE - Allen Reed is the new superintendent at Rutherford Correctional Center, a minimum custody prison that houses 240 inmates and employs 60 officers and administrative staff members.

Reed, who succeeds the retired Michael Callahan, had been assistant superintendent at Rutherford since 2006. His career began as a correctional officer at Western Youth Institution in 1990, where he moved up through the ranks. Reed was a captain at Alexander Correctional for three years before being named assistant superintendent.

He attended Western Piedmont Community College, and is a trained emergency medical technician and firefighter. Reed also has an Advanced Correctional Certificate from the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. He is a general instructor in corrections, and was a Correctional Officer of the Year in 2000.
