The new prison being built near Columbia, NC was a prison work farm similar in construction to the unit being completed. Some inmate workers moved from Dan River to Tyrrell to continue using their construction skills.

In October 1996, work at the site had been underway about two months. Here inmate crews have put waterproofing and wire re-inforcement in place for a dormitory floor slab to be poured.
