Newman Trades Financial Numbers for Golf Scores
The books on Sam Newman’s career in State Government are closed and he’s traded in financial ledgers for the golf course.
More than 125 friends and co-workers gathered June 26 to honor Newman at his retirement with a luncheon at the McKimmon Center in Raleigh. Among those who spoke at the event were former State Auditors Henry Bridges and Ed Renfrow.
Newman, the Department’s controller since March 1997, retired after 30 years of service in State Government. He began his career with the state in 1970, a year after he graduated from N.C. State University. From 1970 to 1996, he held several positions in the State Auditor’s Office, including assistant state auditor and director of performance audits. Newman moved to Correction in 1996 to lead the Internal Audit section for 11 months before assuming the controller’s position.
Newman says he’ ready to begin this new chapter in his life. "It’ exciting to contemplate life without a fixed commitment on my time," he said. "I’ll learn a lot about myself as I see how I use such a precious gift of time."
Also attending the retirement luncheon was Newman’s wife, Jody. Newman was presented the Order of the Long Leaf Pine recognizing his years of state service. An avid traveler, Newman was also presented a gift certificate from a travel agency to be used for his choice of destinations.
