Officer dies responding to house fire

ENGELHARD- Correctional Officer Lisa Farrow of Hyde Correctional Institution died Aug. 9 while responding to a house fire with the Engelhard Fire/Rescue Department. Farrow, who was 30 years old, had been with the Department for four years and had been a volunteer firefighter since January.

Hundreds of mourners, which included correctional officers, firefighters, family and friends, paid their last respects at Farrow’s funeral at Mattamuskeet School Aug. 13. Members of the Honor Guard from the Division of Prisons were pallbearers.

"She loved being a firefighter about as much as she loved being a correctional officer," said Jimmy Hodges, administrative officer at Hyde. "She was always the first on the bandwagon to pitch in and help someone and she would always do things to cheer you up."

Farrow collapsed at the scene of the fire and was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The medical examiner later indicated that Farrow died as a result of a heart problem. She left behind a 10-year old son and an 8-year old daughter.

A Hyde County resident, Farrow graduated from Mattamuskeet High School in 1988. She attended Hardbarger College in Raleigh. Farrow was a certified nurse’s aid at Britthaven of Nags Head before going to work at Hyde.

Because Farrow’s death was not directly attributed to the fire, funds from the federal and state Line of Duty Death benefits may not be available to her family. Many of the staff at Hyde made donations to a fund that was sent to the family. The Engelhard Fire/Rescue Department established a fund to assist Farrow’s family with expenses. Contributions may be sent to:
