In Memory Of Shannon Smith

SELMA- A wreath now stands along U.S. Highway 70 honoring Correctional Officer Shannon Smith who was killed a year ago. A car struck the 25-year old Smith Nov. 9, 1999 while she was supervising an inmate road crew.

Road squad officers who worked with Smith at Johnston Correctional Institution decided the wreath would be a good way to remember their fellow officer. "She was an outstanding officer," said Sgt. W.R. Tomlinson. "We thought it was the thing to do because of everything she had done for the squads. There was nothing she couldn’t do and you always knew you could turn to her if you needed help."

Tomlinson added that they hope to keep the wreath on the roadside as a tribute. "When we feel like it’s weathered, we’ll replace it," said Tomlinson. The wreath is made up of Department colors with blue, yellow and white flowers and a big blue bow.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Smith was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and reckless driving.
