Correctional Leadership Development Program (CLDP)

The Correctional Leadership Development Program (CLDP) is intended to assist management level Correctional Professionals in broadening their knowledge, skills, and values for effective and rewarding roles in Corrections. The impact of Correctional Management in effecting planned change in correctional systems is to a large measure related to Correctional Leaders’ knowledge of and skills in the implementation of sound management theory, concepts, and principles; and creative, but wise, management strategies and practices. Organizations do not “just occur” nor do managed systems “just happen.” Planned change, organized effort, and systems management are the results of vision, leadership, and determination of the leaders. This program examines a multidimensional approach to correctional management toward preparing managers and leaders for the challenges associated with correctional management.

During the course each participant will:

	Demonstrate understanding of management theories and major concepts and principles that undergird correctional management.
	Demonstrate knowledge and skill in planning organization management strategies in a correctional setting.
	Demonstrate knowledge and skill in resourcing organization management strategies in a correctional setting.
	Demonstrate knowledge and skill in implementing organization management strategies in a correctional setting.
	Demonstrate knowledge and skill in evaluating an organization and its cultural climate in a correctional setting.
	Demonstrate knowledge and skill establishing a climate that is professional, ethical, and operationally functional.
	Demonstrate the ability to lead, take responsibility, be accountable for a correctional organization.
	Demonstrate understanding of the importance of preparing the next generation of leaders in DOC.

In order to complete this program, each participant is required to submit a management project. The management project must benefit their Division or some other section of the NC DOC.

The purpose of the management report is to develop analytical, critical thinking skills to assist you in performing your duties as a manager. You will select an issue that you are interested in analyzing, develop a problem statement, research alternative ways to address the problem, identify ways to measure the effects of the alternative that you choose, and prepare an implementation plan. If time permits you will begin implementing or implement the plan.
