DART Cherry

DART Cherry is a 300-bed residential treatment facility responsible for the delivery of chemical dependency treatment services to probationers sent by the courts, and to parolees released from the Division of Prisons and transitioning back to the community.

The program offers three 90-day Therapeutic Community (TC) programs based on the New York Department of Correction's "Stay 'N Out" TC model; a social skills, structured community hierarchy. Programming embraces a cognitive-behavior approach utilizing evidence-based practices and is dedicated to a holistic approach addressing individual needs in six major life areas:

  • Psychological/mental health

  • Medical/physical health

  • Educational/vocational

  • Family/social

  • Legal status

  • Drug/alcohol

Facility counselors are trained in (1) the delivery of Hazelden's "A New Direction" curriculum; and (2) the 12 core functions of substance abuse counseling: screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, referral, report, and record keeping, and consultations with other professionals.

The facility contracts on-site medical services and provides primary medical services at a minimum of 8 hours a day, five days a week. The Medical Director and Physicians Assistant (PA) are on call 24/7 for medical emergencies and other non-routine issues. Of primary concern is the offender's ability to participate at a satisfactory level both mentally and physically with all treatment requirements. The facility is equipped to:

  • Screen each offender at program intake for appropriateness for participation in a DART Cherry program.

  • Provide ongoing assessment of offenders who are identified as having special medical/mental health problems.

  • Treat offenders with minor medical problems such as colds, skin rashes, fungal infections etc.,

  • Provide medical services for minor injuries and illnesses, which may occur during an offender's stay.

  • Medically manage more serious conditions as long as the offender is on a stabilizing medical regimen upon arrival. All such referrals must bring a full supply of medications with them to last for the period of time that they are expected to be in treatment.
