North Carolina Flexible Spending Accounts offers a variety of pre-tax plans to help you save money on your benefits. Your NCFlex choices are pre-tax payroll deducted.

Newly hired employees have thirty days from date of hire to join. Annual enrollment for existing employees and the opportunity to make changes for all NCFlex accounts is October of each year. Coverage under all options starts Jan 1st and lasts through the end of December of each year. Paycheck deductions start on January 31st of each year.

Employees can make changes in their NCFlex elections if they have a Qualifying Family Status Change Event such as marriage, divorce or legal separation, death of a spouse or eligible covered dependent, a dependent loses eligibility, birth or adoption of a child, an incapacitated adult becomes your dependent, spouse becomes employed/unemployed, you or your spouse change from part-time to full-time employment (or vice-versa), or you or your spouse take an unpaid leave of absence.  For more information, please refer to Qualifying Family Status Change Events.

Flex Options

Health Care Flexible Spending Account is for medical, dental, vision or hearing expenses for you and your dependents (including spouse if filing a joint tax return) that are not paid by insurance. You must re-enroll during the annual enrollment period if you wish to continue these benefits every year.

Dependent Day Care Flexible Spending Account is for day care costs and after school expenses for dependent children under 13, or adult day care expenses. You must re-enroll during the annual enrollment period if you wish to continue these benefits each year.  Permanent full time employees and permanent part time employees who work at least 20 hours per week are eligible to participate.

Vision Care Plan is for eye examination, glasses, and contact lenses. There are three options from which to choose: Plan 1 is for employees who want coverage for eye exams and materials, Plan 2 is for employees who prefer coverage for material expenses (glasses, lenses, contact lenses) only, and Plan 3 covers enhanced examinations as well as materials.  All plans offer in-network and non-network services.

Voluntary Accident Death and Dismemberment Insurance (AD&D) is an inexpensive insurance that pays a benefit in the event of a covered member's accidental death or if covered member suffers certain dismemberment injuries (as the result of a covered accident) while insured.

The Dental Care Plan is a traditional dental care plan offering high and low coverage options.  You decide which dental plan fits your needs.  Both plans allow you to select your own dentist.

Cancer Insurance helps pay for expenses related to cancer and 29 other specified diseases.  You can choose between three plan options- Premium Option, High Option, or Low Option.  All options offer the same type of benefits and/or services.  However, in most cases, the Premium Option pays a higher percentage of benefits as compared to the High or Low Option.

Voluntary Group Term Life Insurance coverage pays a benefit to your beneficiary(ies) if you die while covered under the policy.  This is strictly a term life insurance policy that provides a benefit if you die.  There is no accumulated cash value.  Your monthly premium is based on your age and the coverage amount you elect - from $20,000 up to $500,000.

Critical Illness Insurance is designed to complement your existing medical coverage.  If your illness meets the criteria for a covered medical condition, you can receive a lump-sum payment up to $15,000 to cover expenses such as mortgage payments, prescription drugs, rehabilitation, child care, etc.
