Dan River Prison Work Farm -- Community Work Program

Dan River will put 182 inmates to work in 13 community work squads, the largest number for any North Carolina prison.

"We have promoted this facility to the surrounding area largely in light of what the work farm can do, saving communities money," Dan River Superintendent Wayne Moore said. "We've helped public agencies understand how they can use the community work program to get work accomplished."

Officers at Dan RiverSgt. Thomas Ashley and Sgt. Jenifer Rayl of Dan River say they've already talked to a number of agencies who are interested. The squads will be put to work in Caswell and seven neighboring counties: Alamance, Durham, Granville, Guilford, Orange, Person and Rockingham.

The community work program was piloted in 1994 as a way of putting inmate labor to work for local governments. A correctional officer supervises squads of up to 14 inmates in short term, manual labor jobs for public agencies. Last year, community work squad inmates worked 1.4 million hours on public works projects.
