MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT OF SEXUAL OFFENDERS

The North Carolina Department of Corrections created the Sexual Offender Accountability and Responsibility (S.O.A.R.) program in January 1991. This program is an intensive residential treatment program located at the Harnett Correctional Institution. For information on the S.O.A.R. Program click here.

In addition to the residential S.O.A.R. Program the Mental Health staff at various locations also conduct non-residential sexual offender treatment for inmates who do not attend S.O.A.R. and follow-up services for inmates who complete S.O.A.R. and are transferred back to their original units. The treatment emphasis is on victim empathy training, rational emotive therapy with confrontation of denial or minimization of aberrent behavior, and relapse prevention planning.
