Guilford Correctional Center |
Guilford Correctional Center, near McLeansville, is a minimum-security prison for adult males.
The prison sits on a five acre site on Camp Burton Road, just across from a Department of Transportation facility. In the original prison, inmates were housed in a building that had two dormitories. A modular dormitory was added in 1978. These housing units are still in use today.
In 1977, inmates supervised by correction engineers built a segregation facility with 28 single cells. Trailers provided space for medical, education and processing staff and offices. A dental clinic is housed in a modular building. The prison also added a chapel in 1990.
Lawmakers provided a 50 bed dormitory at Guilford as part of the $28.5 million Emergency Prison Facilities Development program authorized in 1987.
Guilford Technical Community College works with the prison to provide classes for adult education and preparation for the GED tests.
Inmates work in a number of jobs. They may be assigned to Department of Transportation road crews or work under contract for local government agencies. Inmates may also be assigned to maintenance or kitchen duties. Inmates nearing parole may participate in work release, leaving the prison for part of the day to work for a business in the community.
Inmates may participate in substance abuse treatment programs.
