Medical professionals working in some North Carolina prisons may be eligible for federal loan repayment for their medical education through the National Health Service Corps (NHSC).  This federal program provides loan repayment for medical professionals who work at NHSC approved sites and in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs).  Loan repayment up to $50,000 for two years of service and $145,000 for five years of service are possible for eligible medical professionals.

These Division of Prisons facilities are approved as NHSC sites:

  • Brown Creek Correctional Institution - Polkton
  • Lanesboro Correctional Institution - Polkton
  • Scotland Correctional Institution - Laurinburg
  • Craggy Correctional Center - Asheville
  • Avery/Mitchell Correctional Institution - Spruce Pine
  • Mountain View Correctional Institution - Spruce Pine
  • Foothills Correctional Institution - Morganton
  • Warren Correctional Institution - Manson
  • Lumberton Correctional Institution - Lumberton

These medical specialties are eligible for NHSC loan repayment:

  • Physician (MD or DO)
  • Dentist (general or pediatric)
  • Nurse Practitioner (primary care)
  • Certified Nurse-Midwife
  • Physician Assistant
  • Dental Hygienist
  • Psychologist (health service)
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker
  • Psychiatric Nurse Specialist
  • Marriage and Family Therapist
  • Licensed Professional Counselor
