TWO FOOD SERVICE EMPLOYEES RECEIVE TOP AWARDS

Greensboro - David E. Oxendine, food services supervisor at Lumberton Correctional institution received the 1997 Operator of the Year Award for outstanding performance in correctional food service and Rebecca Strickland was named Employee of the Year by the N.C. chapter of the American Correctional Food Service Association. The awards were announced in June during the annual state conference of the ACFSA.

In describing Oxendine’s excellence at financial and operational techniques, Supt Pat Chavis said, "Mr. Oxendine looks for ways and to save money and he is conscientious of food costs. He provides nutritional meals and stresses kitchen cleanliness. He has been instrumental in helping new prisons set up their kitchens and train staff.
Strickland was the food service supervisor at Granville Correctional Center until it recently closed. While at Granville, Strickland maintained an immaculate kitchen. She managed her unit resources and supplies through the prison’s final days until all the inmates had been transferred and the unit shut down. Strickland has the same position at Polk Youth Institution.

"She has made an excellent adjustment and has more responsibilities," said Brian Murry, Polk’s director of food services. She has gained respect from staff and inmates by providing close supervision, effective communication, and displaying a firm demeanor."
