Enterprise was noted as a facility case study for its
accomplishments in waste reduction and employee involvement programs. The
plant reduced the quantity of 30-gallon steel drums that previously had
to be recycled. Standard practice was to pour paint directly into a steel
drum and deliver it to DOT. Empty drums were picked up, sent to a recycler,
and cleaned for reuse at the plant. The average life span of a drum was
five uses, at which time the drum was cleaned, crushed, and sold as scrap
metal.
Since using plastic drum liners, each drum may be used up to 10 times between each cleaning. This move has reduced drum processing costs by 67 percent. |
