EXECUTION DATE SET FOR ROBERT BACON JR.

RALEIGH – Correction Secretary Theodis Beck has set Sept. 21 as the execution date for Death Row inmate Robert Bacon Jr. (#0013955). The execution is tentatively scheduled for 2 a.m at Central Prison.

An execution date was originally scheduled for May 18, but was stayed by the North Carolina Supreme Court. The stay was dissolved Aug. 2.

Bacon, 40, was convicted June 4, 1987 in Onslow County. He received the death sentence for the Feb. 1, 1987 murder of Glennie Clark, his girlfriend's estranged husband. Bacon was also convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to three years in prison.

A media tour at Central Prison is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. This will be the only time the news media will be allowed to photograph the execution chamber and death watch area before the execution. Interested reporters and photographers should be at Central Prison’s visitor center promptly at 10 a.m. During the tour, Warden R.C. Lee will explain execution procedures. The session will last approximately one hour.

Reporters who plan to attend the media tour should call the Department of Correction Public Information Office at number above.
