Construction to start on three new prisons

Correction officials and local leaders in Alexander, Anson and Scotland counties broke ground on Nov. 7 and 8 at the sites of three new 1,000-cell close custody prisons.

The prisons are expected to be complete in 18-24 months and should begin accepting inmates sometime in 2003.

In Alexander County the new facility is located on a picturesque, rolling site off Old Landfill Road near Taylorsville.

Alexander groundbreaking
Officials throw the first shovels of dirt at the site of the Alexander County prison on Nov. 8. The prison complex will sit atop the hill in the background.

Clearing trees at Scotland site
Tree clearing work is already underway at the
 Scotland County site.

The Anson County site is on Camden Church Road near Brown Creek Correctional Institution and the Scotland County site is located near the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport on McGirt's Bridge Road.

Each facility will be identical in design, layout and equipment installed and will encompass approximately 400,000 sq. ft.

The facilities are being built by Carolina Corrections LLC and Centex Rooney Construction Company. Upon completion they will be leased back to the North Carolina Department of Correction to operate and maintain. After completion the Department of Correction will also have the right to purchase each facility.

Each new prison will provide jobs for 403 employees.
