Scott honored as probation/parole officer of the year
APEX
- Probation/Parole Officer James Nathan Scott of Scotland County was recognized
today by Correction Secretary Theodis Beck and the North Carolina Department of
Correction as one of four Probation/Parole and Community Supervision Officers of
the Year.
Scott supervises a caseload of 68 offenders on probation/parole in Scotland County. He is honored for his determined and caring efforts assisting a probationer he found last July living in extremely unsanitary conditions.
Scott called EMS to the probationer’s home and accompanied the man to the hospital. After doctors finished treatment in the emergency room, Scott worked to get the probationer admitted to a psychiatric facility. When doctors refused admission, Scott obtained a commitment order from a magistrate and was finally able to get the probationer the help he needed.
According to Judicial District Manager Frank Davis, the probationer would have likely died without Scott’s intervention, due to his medical condition and the lack of family or friends to care for him.
Scott is a 1989 graduate of Morris College in Sumter, S.C. with a degree in sociology. He joined the Department of Correction in 1995 as a surveillance officer.
