Secretary names new Correction Enterprises director

Karen BrownRALEIGH- Secretary Theodis Beck has named Karen Brown director of Correction Enterprises effective June 1. As director, Brown will oversee all sections and operations under Correction Enterprises, which has prison industries across the state.

"Karen Brownís strong business and finance background makes her an ideal person for this job," said Secretary Beck. "I am confident her experience with the Department and as a manager will help her excel in this new role."

Brown joined the Department 11 years ago in the Central Engineering section and has been serving as assistant director for administrative services. Prior to that she managed a finance company.

"I am looking forward to working with the professional and dedicated Enterprises staff," said Brown. "This division is one of the best run and most unique in state government and I hope to continue to build on the strengths already in place."

Correction Enterprises provides quality goods and services to government agencies at competitive market prices. Inmates supervised by Enterprises staff learn trades in a variety of industries that include the license tag plant, printing plant, sewing plant, paint plant, metal sign plant, furniture plant and Caledonia Farm. It receives no support from state budget allocations and, like a business, is totally supported through the goods and services it produces and sells.

With a father in the U.S. Marine Corps, Brown says she has moved around a lot, but thinks of North Carolina as home. She attended Rocky Mount Senior High School and went on to earn a bachelorís degree in economics and international business from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also earned a masterís degree in business administration from Meredith College. In addition, Brown is a graduate of the Departmentís Correctional Leadership Development Program.

Her husband, Richard "Mac" Brown is a computing consultant in the Controllerís Office. He is also a major in the 130th Military History Detachment of the National Guard and has been taking part in Operation Enduring Freedom. When sheís not working, Brownís two sons keep her busy. She also enjoys reading, traveling and relaxing on the Pamlico River. In addition, she is an officer and active volunteer in the P.T.A. at her sonís school.

Brown replaces Jim Godwin who is retiring effective June 30.
